The building remains in Methodist Church Circuit ownership and a joint project, with the Boys’ Brigade doing day-to-day management, the six8nine now provides a community venue for organisations and groups who primarily have a young people, or health related focus.
There is a vision and a plan for the future of the building and everyone is looking forward to seeing the project grow into a wonderful thriving hub for goodness, health and community use. The Boys’ Brigade leaders are pioneering this work and have high hopes for the success of the project.
Building History
The first building to be erected on the site at Westbourne was a Tin Chapel in 1885. This was used for worship and service until it was badly damage during the Second World War (1939 – 1945). The school rooms where built in 1906 next to the Chapel.
The 8th Hartlepool Boys’ Brigade, who had called Westbourne home for 87 years, started using the school rooms in 1936.
After the Chapel was damaged during the war, Sunday worship and services continued in the schoolrooms, This was refurbished as a worship centre which was re-dedicated in May 2000. The Tin Chapel was demolished in 1999.
Following the Covid pandemic in 2020, the congregation of Westbourne made the decision to join other churches in the Circuit for Sunday worship.
The building is now a Methodist community hub in partnership with Hartlepool Boys, Brigade.
